SHAGRAT
RECORDS
Independent label: Shagrat Records was started in 1990 by Nigel Cross, founding editor of
Bucketfull of Brains magazine. It issued singles in an TS-000 numerical
series. Shagrat was a British supergroup formed by Steve Peregrin Took R.i.p and
Mick Farren R.i.p in February 1970 after they split with Twink, their partner in
the prototype Pink Fairies supergroup of late 1969. They recruited Larry Wallis
(guitar, backing vocals) and Tim Taylor (bass). Mick Farren left the band
shortly after and never recorded with them. Shagrat then became Took's band
outright with Wallis, Taylor, Phil Lenoir (drums), and later Dave Bidwell
(percussion). Farren died at the age of 69 in 2013, after collapsing while
performing with the Deviants at the Borderline Club in London. Steve Took died
on Monday 27 October 1980 at the age of 31. At the time, he was sharing a flat
with Valerie Billiet. Took's death certificate records the cause of death as
being due to asphyxiation after inhaling a cocktail cherry. Drugs were not
listed as a contributing factor, even though Took's death is often listed as a
"drugs misadventure". He is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery Distributed By
Shagrat Records Records.
